Play The main feature of this puppy is its snuggling actions. It wiggles and moves when being held, like its trying to get comfy. It responds to being fed with the milk bottle by making slurping noises and a burb. It goes to sleep when laid on its side or back, including the sides moving up and down to simulate breathing. It responds to having its belly and head scratched by opening and closing its eyes while making happy sounds. A very cute puppy, indeed. Observations Getting the pup out of the box is a process. There are a large number of twist-ties and plastic do-dads holding it in, so don’t expect to just pop it out and start playing. Once out, there will be a switch on the left back paw (if you’re facing the pup’s front) that moves to Try Me, On, and Off. Try Me is the in-store demo, and is limited in the number of movements and sounds it will makes. Pop that switch over to On and see what all the pup can do. The major appeal of this toy is its cute factor. When laid on its side or back, the belly will rise and fall like it’s breathing while the pup makes little noises, including a bit of snoring. Feed the pup with the included bottle to hear slurping and burps, or pet it to watch it close its eyes and seem really quite content with itself. The toy does not walk, but its legs can be moved like a stuffed animal. The toy doesn’t respond to commands or sounds, so shouting “roll over” or “sit” will do nothing. In fact, the toy doesn’t do much else than make noises and breathe. Like a real pup, it doesn’t speak, doesn’t tell kids how much it loves them, or anything like that. Some kids may get bored of this toy after a while, especially those kids who expect the toy to be more interacitve. While this toy is cute when it works, we have seen an alarming number of reports of defects. We are unable to pin down exactly what percentage of purchases are defective, though the complaints are much more frequent than is usually expected for such a popular toy.  Complaints come from a wide variety of sources, and follow the same pattern. A number of toys are either defective as soon as they come out of the box, or they stop working properly about a week after first use. The most common defects are described as: <ul> <li>Getting stuck on one sound and not stopping until batteries are removed</li> <li>Randomly making sounds when not being played with, such as suddenly barking when sitting on a dresser at night</li> <li>Making a sound like metal grinding without end</li> <li>Not responding to milk bottle being placed on mouth</li> <li>Continuing to bark when laid down to sleep</li> </ul> These are not corrected when new batteries are installed. A warning label on the toy requests that any defects be addressed to the manufacturer, Moose Toys, instead of being returned to the store where it was purchased. Ignore this label. If the toy is not working correctly, return it to the store, just like you would with anything else. According to users, Moose Toys is not responding quickly to complaints, and sometimes not responding at all. There is also <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Little-Live-Pets-Tiara-Playset/dp/B01M028Y0B/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1479238588&sr=1-10&keywords=little+live+pets&linkCode=ll1&tag=toti08-20&linkId=b8126235b45090af9132052bb8eda989" linktype="3" target="_blank">Tiara</a>, a white, fluffy pup, and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/LITTLE-LIVE-RUFFLES-DREAM-PUPPY/dp/B01LYNWDP3/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1479239753&sr=1-1&keywords=little+live+pets+puppy+ruffles&linkCode=ll1&tag=toti08-20&linkId=50bf2128bfc113871e418931d299bb9e" linktype="3" target="_blank">Ruffles</a>, the schnauzer. We have not gotten to review Tiara or Ruffles, and do not know if they are as prone to defects as Snuggles. Concerns A number of pups have been reported as defective. Some fail to work properly upon purchase, while others break down a week after first use. We worry about the apparent lack of quality, and feel that more time should have been spent testing the product before production. We highly recommend removing the toy from the package and testing to make sure it works before giving to a child to help avoid upset.Another toy that is not only interactive but expressive, this toy pup closes and opens his eyes sleepily when scratched on the head, breathes and snores when napping on his side, and barks greetings when his nose is rubbed. We understand why so many kids feel in love when they first saw <a href="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8VzuKW9aMiY" linktype="3" target="_blank">the commercial</a>. As excited as many kids have been about this little pup, we find ourselves less than stoked due to the toy’s questionable quality. While complaints are always going to crop up, the frequency has been much greater than usual for this toy, so we recommend testing the toy upon purchase to make sure it works. Since a number of toys break down after only a week of use, we also ask that buyers be prepared with a backup toy option in the case this one bites the dust. Play Videos can be edited and shared via text, email, and on social media. Parents can set restrictions to keep videos from being shared online. Videos can be made just by using the forward facing camera on the smartphone, but StarMaker will need to be downloaded and a free account registered in order to save, edit, and share videos within the app. Observations Most kids have this toy up and running straight out of the box. It can be used to record videos directly to the phone, but videos with edited effects will need the StarMaker app. A free account must be registered to download extra songs, spend tokens, and save and share videos through the app. StarMaker works on a token system. Many, but not all of the songs are free, with some costing anywhere from 25 to 250 tokens a pop. Tokens are collected in several ways during the use of the app. 5 tokens are given for completing a song, and additional tokens are given when a song is performed well according to the app’s scoring system. Think RockBand in app form. The closer the user can match the words and pitch, the higher the score will be. This token system has been the one big point of contention for this toy. The toy is advertised as being free to use, and yes, technically this is true. However, children who want to download particular songs may need to earn more tokens before they are able to do so. We understand how this is frustrating, and wish the product was more up front about this process. Registering a free account with StarMaker gains the user with 300 tokens. Another 700 tokens can be gotten by redeeming the product coupon code, included in the toy’s packaging. Additional tokens can be purchased if these are not enough. “Hooks” can be accessed for free on most songs, but are usually only the chorus, or the most memorable part of the song. These hooks last around 30 – 45 seconds. Videos can be shared on YouTube and other social media, as well as sent via text and email. StarMaker also acts as a kind of karaoke community, and videos can be shared with other users, too. Accounts are all automatically started out as private, so any video sharing will requires the account be changed to public settings. Children only need be 13 or older to share videos through the app, so the app’s privacy policy states that it is not meant for children under 13. The toy can be used without the app, though we imagine most kids are expecting the app to be available to them. Please talk about privacy and safety with children.   The Selfie Mic website has <a href="https://selfiemic.com/faq/" linktype="3" target="_blank">more FAQ’s available</a>, some of which were not covered here. The Selfie Mic works with the free app, StarMaker, letting users record themselves singing along to the song of their choice, adding filters, auto-tuning, and assorted other visual and audio effects as they go. The app provides a huge number of songs for free, but there are some songs that cost tokens. These tokens can be bought, or earned by completing songs and scoring well during the song. We explain more about this in the Observations section, below. Most users are quite happy with this toy. The sound quality is good considering it’s a children’s toy meant to entertain teens with no expectation of professional grade capabilities. Lightweight materials are easy to hold, and the technology is super easy to figure out, with most kids getting everything to work before the parents have read the instructions. While the toy declares itself suitable for children 8 and up, the StarMaker app requires children be at least 13 due to the sharing feature for videos. The toy can be used without the app, though editing features will not be available to them.
