We’re pretty disappointed in these. Anyone familiar with other building blocks such as LEGO or Duplo will immediately assume that these can be used in a similar way. However, according to the manufacturer, these “are designed for stacking and do not connect or snap together.” We disagree. Looking at the little pegs and notches that should normally click together like other blocks, and the container’s lid which is also clearly meant to be used as a surface for these blocks to connect to, we think ALEX Toys amended their product description to reflect reality, not the original design.

Getting a lot of frustrated users, these blocks indeed can not be snapped together. They tend to fall over after the third one is stacked on top. The colors are lovely, and shining a light through them in a dark room is a beautiful sight, but that doesn’t make up for the fact that they aren’t very good blocks.

Detailed Review

Toy Description

50 building blocks that are translucent and brightly colored. Made of a plastic thinner than that of Duplo blocks, which we assume is to help light shine through.

Two sets of wheel bases are included, so two cars can be made at once. The lid doubles as a building base, and the original case can be reused for block storage.

Two people figures are also included.

Play

These really only work if they are one or two layers deep. They don’t connect, but have to be stacked and balanced, so they can’t really be used like normal building blocks.

Building a wall along a windowsill or near a lamp light is pretty, but not terribly exciting.

Observations

Some users are really fascinated with these. They report preschoolers enjoying watching the colors when these are used on a light table. They need to be kept to a single layer for this to work well.

We found them lacking in quality. Recommended for ages 2 and up, we do not see how 2 year olds are expected to balance these on top of each other without bumping anything. Again, they don’t connect due to a poor design, but they have to be balanced. Very frustrating for all involved.

We would have respected ALEX Toys if they had admitted that the toy was not designed well. As it is, trying to pass off a production error as user incompetence is insulting, to say the least.

Care

  • Wipe down with a damp cloth
  • Wash in warm, soapy water

Concerns

We are unimpressed with the quality of this toy. While the idea is nice, and the blocks look very lovely, we do expect building blocks to be able to connect to each other better.
