Detailed Review

Toy Description

A set of eight, vibrantly colored cupcakes that help children ages two and up enhance their knowledge of colors and shapes.

Play
The main goal of this toy is to help children match their colors and their shapes to master their skills of these two concepts. The child can take the frosting off each cupcake and then figure out which frosting goes with each cake. Then, they can fit the pieces back together.

Observations

This set of eight, bright-colored, and realistic-looking cupcakes is a toy designed for kids at the beginning stages of learning their basic shapes and colors. It comes in an adorable little cupcake pan with eight cupcakes with different colored frostings. When you take the frosting top off of each cupcake, there is a little shape. Take them all apart, mix them up, and let the child find the matching frosting and cupcake.

Made of hard plastic, this toy is very durable and affordable. It guides children as they have been taught their shapes and colors, and they are working on mastering their skills. Although specifically made for learning, this doesn’t have to be just a learning toy. Users have said that their kids have simply used the cupcakes as fake food when they play in the kitchen, or even just like to carry them around in the pan. Kids will be kids, and things will get dirty. Luckily, these plastic cupcakes are incredibly easy to clean. Hand wash them in some soap and they’ll be good as new.

Users have commented that the way the frosting top fits into the cupcake is very snug, and so it can be hard for kids to pull them apart. Many other reviewers have complained that this toy has a bad odor-a chemical, almost toxic smelling odor when the box is opened. For some, it has gone away with washing, but others not. However, for other users, they’ve never had this problem, so it depends on the box you get. Learning Resources is still trying to figure out the cause of this smell, but most likely, if there is a chemical smell, it’s easily washable.

Care

  • Because of complaints of a chemical smell, we recommend you wash the toy, even if it doesn’t have a smell, before giving it to your child
  • Toy can be washed by hand in a sink or in the dishwasher

Parts and Pieces

All parts- the frosting and cupcake parts, as well as the pan, are made of hard, durable plastic.

Concerns

The only concern users expressed was the toxic smell. It is unknown why the toys are smelling like this, so we recommend thoroughly washing the toy before allowing your child to play with it.

Manufacturer's Description

These cupcakes have a surprise filling –shapes! A delicious way to encourage shape and color identification, and build fine motor skills! Each two-piece cupcake pulls apart to reveal a different shape. Children match up the shapes like a puzzle to put the cupcakes back together. Children use eye-hand coordination along with cooperative hand movements to hold and turn the pieces to fit together. Once the cupcake is complete, children can further test their matching skills by matching the shape of the cupcake to the shape on the bottom of the pan. Shapes include circle, square, triangle, rectangle, diamond, hexagon, star, and heart. The frosting color on each cupcake is different to introduce color identification. Children can learn the three primary colors of red, blue, and yellow, three secondary colors of purple, orange, and green, along with pink and teal. Set includes 8 two-piece cupcakes, 1 muffin tin. Each cupcake measures 2 inch H x 1 ½ inch D. For ages 2+.
