Teeter Popper

by Fat Brain Toys
current stage2016-05-25

What happens when you mix the fun of a seesaw with the focused pleasure of popping bubble wrap? The Teeter Popper. Rock, wobble, tilt, or even spin in circles! Whatever the movement, the silicone suction cups on the rounded bottom pop, pop, pop as the toy is moved over a hard surface. Safe for wood, tile, and linoleum floors, this toy allows for active play indoors without taking up too much space.

Getting mostly great reviews, children seem to have an all or nothing approach to it. Many kids really enjoy it, spending over an hour at a time trying their balancing skills, while some kids play with it once and then never again. We would recommend this toy for an active child who has the ability to focus. Children who enjoy swings, jump ropes, mini-trampolines, and the Bilibo have a better chance of liking this toy, but it may be a pass for children who can’t be active in one place.

Observations

It may seem strange to see the words “active” and “stationary” put together, but that’s exactly what this type of toy provides. Active play that stays in one place gives kids a way to burn off extra energy while keeping to a small space. Great for those bad weather days or when a large yard isn’t available.

Rocking in the toy while sitting helps children learn the fundamental dynamics of balance and improves some of their core strength. Once they feel confident, they can get up on their feet and challenge their coordination while furthering improving their core strength and lower body control. As with any toy that engages in balance and coordination, this toy will help with body awareness and movement control.

Silicone suction cups along the bottom provide a very entertaining popping noise, similar to that of popping bubble wrap. Most users do not describe the sound as being loud enough to disturb others in the house or become annoying. However, a few users did describe the sound as “terribly annoying,” so please be mindful of what sounds certain children or surrounding adults may be particularly sensitive to before purchasing.

In addition to making sound, the suction cups provide a bit of stability to the toy. This helps reduce the chance for injury while children are still learning how to properly balance. We see this toy as a kind of precursor to a skateboard. It doesn’t use the same types of pushing movements but there are similarities in the muscles needed.

Meant for only hard surfaces, the toy will continues to function as a means to challenge balance while on carpet, but the suction cups won’t make any popping sound or provide any traction. There is a greater chance of children injuring themselves while on carpet, since the toy may slip out from under a standing child.

The manufacturer recommends this toy for ages 3 and up, though we feel this is a bit of an overreach. The weight limit is 110 lbs, so most older teens and adults are disqualified right there. Most users have reported younger children from the ages of 3-6 years old getting the most enjoyment from this toy, while children older than that seem to play with it when they want to show up the younger kids.

We found no difference in how the toy is used by girls or boys. So long as the child is willing to have an introspective focus and explore how their body can move, the toy will likely suit them.
